Dreams of growing up

For a while now I’ve wanted to make an orange spotted tiger clearwing piece; probably as soon as I’ve stumbled over pictures of it over on pinterest. But alas, I became sick inbetween and while I already had the separate components finished up it took me ages to put them together.

I started off with the puppa; I made it from polymer clay and then brushed it with the fimo mica powder before adding all the details. I think I also added the shine before painting is as in the “real thing” the markings appear matter than the golden backdrop. (The actual puppa is shinier, it’s almost as reflective as a mirror. And when the butterfly gets close to hatching it turns clear and you can actually see the pattern of the wings through it. It’s stunning. I might make another piece with that in the future) The caterpillar was a bit fiddly( as you might imagine, but otherwise fairly straightforward. I did have to cut a few of the segments in parts in order to have him look upwards and hence make the dreaming part of this piece a little more enhanced. I also made the caterpillars eyes fairly shiny.

Another thing I opted for in this piece was to create a custom “lid” for my glass cylinder. Unfortunately I was only able to get ones that had a little loop on top which will work well if I make designs where the flat part will be at the bottom, but for this sculpt I didn’t think it would work out well enough. And since my snowwhite piece worked out so well with the custom backing, I decided to give it another go. I came up eith a few different options (which I actually might turn into molds), a grass one, a wood one and one that would be very plain but onto which I would paint a fully developed orange spotted tiger clearwing. And while I really liked the idea of the painting and having all parts of the metamorphosis in one piece, I decided against it because it would probably have distracted from the overall look of the piece too much. Also it would have been so much extra work and would have made the piece really really expensive.

This is a more inspirational approach than a naturalistic one and I really liked the outcome of it! I don’t know yet if I’d like to go into a more associative direction with my sculpts or maybe just realise this in the naming (which up to now for my pieces is fairly straightforward, which, to be honest, sometimes bothers me a bit); what do you think?

I decided to make another account over on artstation . Because apparently I don't have enough social media sites already ;)
Cast treefrog

Finally I managed to work on my little treefrog! It’s only a trial piece, since the positive had too many undercuts (which I remedied and I’m really excited about the outcome of the second cast) and it now has one limb too little, which very much hurts my perfectionist’s heart, but the rest of it I’m really happy with. I adore the overall look and feel of the pendant and I really loved polishing it with the brush-appendixes on my dremel; it was pretty much instantly done (as opposed to working on it for literally HOURS by hand on the donut) and it ended up with a lovely sheen. I don’t even think I’m going to give them the liver of sulphur treatment the octopus got; I think they are fine the way they are! What do you guys think?

Overall making this has made me all the more excited for the “real thing” which I hope I’ll be able to put online in June (My liver of sulphur has expired and I’m checking out alternatives atm that might preferably be a little less toxic or at least more long lasting; I already got a tip about using the stabilised gel though as opposed to the straight on liquid as it doesn’t deter as fast) and I’m also going to be away for two weeks at the beginning of may which upsets the whole schedule quite a bit. My goal is to have enough scheduled posts to cover that time but let’s see if I can manage that :P

Anyways, need to get dressed for watching the “hunchback of notre dame”. Very excited for that, it’s probably my favourite disney movie :)

Thanks for reading all of my rambling and I would love to hear some feedback; whether you would prefer LoS or not or whatever you feel would be good input for this piece. Cheers and have a lovely Sunday!

SIngle snail

This week I’ve been really sick. I don’t really have any energy whatsoever to focus on any consecutive project; luckily I had to polish up my brass pieces, which was mainly a few details which is easier to focus on than a full artwork. I’m almost done btw, there’s only two little tweaks on the octopus and I hope I’ll have them in one or two weeks. Which is actually when my holiday will start and I don’t think I’ll be able to put them up before that. I’ll also be closing my etsy shop for 2 weeks starting on may 29th and the revamp it a little bit after I come back on.

So, but now to this piece: As I mentioned in the other snail one, I made two of them that I wanted to put into one dome which didn’t work, but I’m really happy how this one turned out. I think it worked really well in itself and I really like the “expression” of the snail. The pendant is steel coloured and the hemisphere itself measures 25mm.

And now I’ll go and eat the soup that’s been prepared for me.  Probably gonna sleep more afterwards...

Snail trail

I’ve been thinking about doing a snail piece quite some time now, but as things are never got around to actually making it. Until I did. And now here it is.

In the original designs there were two snails, one on the forest floor and one making its way across the dome, but as per usual, they got to big to both fit and so I ended up making two pendants. They both turned out quite different, which I really like. They both ended up being a little unrealistic in terms of their “bellies” as that part usually is much more ombre, but I quite like the effect. And I think I want to go back and make more snails in the future as I really liked how these guys turned out. They are also really cool animals to play around with, I can see myself taking a more impulsive/impressionist route with them, mashing up colours and textures as I go.

So, to this actual piece: It was the little snail that was intended to make its way along the inside of the glass and once I figured it wouldn’t work as intended I looked around to see what else I could put it in and then came up with this little globe, and I really like the outcome. To make the snail work well with the dome shape I baked it in one of my domes which made the bottom of the snail come out glass smooth. This looked so cool; almost like an agate! The trail of slime the snake leaves is made from resin and is actually not as visible as I’d like it to be but it makes for a nice distortion. A really cool thing about it also is that as the snail is so small and so light that it doesn’t really affect the balance of the globe and it still hangs pretty straight.

My name is Astrid and I’m one of those 20-somethings who happily refuse to grow up.
My CV consists of many things that seem unrelated: I went to a bilingual language school, then to an art school, studied German (wrote my Thesis on memes) was an aupair and now work in retail.
What has been consistent is my love for creating.
The main aspiration of my work is to make things that enchant people. I love the thought that someone who has a piece I made falls in love with it over and over again every time they look at it.
I also love to create fanart. A very dear friend of mine (taco-yaki.deviantart.com) honored every movie, every anime, every book he finished (and liked) with an artwork. And I found that sort fascinating and very honorary to the original piece that one invests time and effort into making their own interpretation of it.
But I am, first and foremost, a dreamer. I have dreamt as long as I can remember and will continue to do so as long as I can. And I dream that one day I will be able to make a living with my art. And I very much hope to achieve that goal.
Currently I live in Berlin, though I’m very much an Austrian girl still.
